SketchUp Pro is a powerful tool that makes 3D easy for architecture, construction, engineering, MEP, and more. SketchUp has two versions, SketchUp Make and SketchUp Pro. SketchUp Make is for personal use and you can download it for free here. SketchUp Pro is for commercial use.

SketchUp Pro is powerful because it’s intuitive and simple, allowing architects to quickly evolve design ideas and document modelling work in both 3D and 2D formats. It’s also used by structural engineers, fabricators and detailers to communicate complex structures visually, streamlining collaboration with other project stakeholders. General Contractors and Construction Managers use this massing model to drive design discussions, as well as conceptual estimates. One common tool used across all phases of Design-Build-Operate helps everyone to speak the same language and stay on the same page.

SketchUp is easy to use, most people are productive in a couple of hours, plus you can find almost anything you need in the SketchUp 3D Warehouse, the world’s biggest repository of 3D models. LayOut in SketchUp Pro even lets you add model views to pages, choose drawing scales, adjust line weights, and add dimensions, callouts, and graphics. You can also export PDFs, images and CAD files. SketchUp is even customisable with Ruby API and there’s a warehouse of extensions to help you.

The easiest way to draw in 3D

Many architectural firms use SketchUp Make (the free version) as a quick way to design and model new ideas.

Get good fast

There’s a reason SketchUp is synonymous with friendly and forgiving 3D modelling software: we don’t sacrifice usability for the sake of functionality. Start by drawing lines and shapes. Push and pull surfaces to turn them into 3D forms. Stretch, copy, rotate and paint to make anything you like. (link to tutorials, but only open to clients)

Turn models into documents
At some point in most 3D projects, you’ll need to turn your model into a drawing set that gets the point across. LayOut in SketchUp Pro lets you add model views to pages, choose drawing scales, adjust line weights, and add dimensions, callouts, and graphics. Make a change to your SketchUp model, and find it reflected automatically in LayOut. And when it’s time, export pages as PDFs, images and CAD files.

Who can benefit from the Pro Version?

Large architectural practices already using the free version of SketchUp, together with Revit® or ArchiCad® as their main documentation tool will find SketchUp Pro an additional time saver through the added functionalities. Small to medium sized firms will find the cost of very agreeable to their budgets.

SketchUp Make v SketchUp Pro

SketchUp Make is a free version of SketchUp, for non-commercial use ONLY. If you are using SketchUp commercially, you will need to purchase a licence of SketchUp Pro.

The Cost

For just under £540, architectural firms can produce full documentation and design either using it as a stand-alone, or add it as a more effective tool used in conjunction with ArchiCad and Revit. The initial outlay includes full support for one year, a set of ‘easy-to-follow’ beginners’ tutorials as well as the upgrade, SketchUp 2018 when it becomes available. Thereafter a yearly maintenance and support cost of £94.00 applies.

What's New in Pro 2017?

What matters more than how fast, smoothly, and reliably SketchUp renders your models?

In this release, SketchUp have made major improvements to the graphics pipeline, allowing for performance improvements everywhere you see a .SKP. Now, SketchUp, 3D Warehouse, LayOut, my.SketchUp, and Trimble Connect all render models using the same under-the-hood algorithms—all tuned for buttery 3D orbiting.

See (through) that?

Along with our graphics pipeline overhaul, we’ve made big improvements to transparency, which should now render faster and at higher quality too. SketchUp is also now much better at displaying multiple transparencies to provide a more realistic sense of depth across several see-through faces. And for good measure, we’ve added the ability to fine-tune the opacity level in X-ray mode.

We’re always sharpening our ‘heuristics’, the ins and outs that make SketchUp quick and precise.

Licence Options

For a list of educational licences, please click here.

There are various options available to use commercially:

Single User Licences

A Single-user licence is assigned to one person and can only be used by the registered user.

That individual can install the licence on two computers that they use BUT only use one at the same time. This is typically a work computer/desktop and a laptop.

Only ONE person can use a single user licence. A single user licence cannot be shared between colleagues.

For a customer to be compliant, they must have a single user licence for any employee that uses SketchUp (or look at network licensing).

Network Licences

A network licence covers EVERYONE within a company. Every employee who uses SketchUp, whether that be all day every day, or just for 10 minutes a week – will be covered by this licence

Note: For a network licence to work, SketchUp needs to be able to communicate over ports 5053 and 50530.

Private Server Network Licence

If you are unable to open the required ports (5053 and 50530) to use a standard network licence, then a private server licence is an alternative option.

The private server network licence is hosted on your own server. Commercial private network licences are available for 1 or 2-year term periods.

Private Server Network Licences can only be created as NEW and it is not possible to convert an existing Network Licence to an Offline (private server) license. Additionally, once a Private Server Network Licence has been generated it cannot be altered or upgraded (no adding of seats is possible). You will be obligated to use the version of SketchUp you purchased for the term of the licence purchased. Only available on a Windows 64-bit server only, it is not offered as a server option for any other operating system.

Enterprise Licences

These are worth a look if you are:
